Marren
Marren, the home world of the Skelks is the last remaining planet in the Cove System that supports life. One-hundred and fifty years ago, Sprilla collided with Marren and was knocked out of its orbit and was consumed by Cove. The collision set off a cataclysmic chain of events that would eventually lead to the star going supernova. Skelk and Mastacor scientists gathered and a solution was conceived that involved creating a series of satellites that would emit artificial sunlight that would sustain life on Marren for the next thousand years. The satellites were built but a power source proved elusive until a young Skelk named Dr. Cassian Vinegar was able to create the Star Shadow. At the moment Cove went supernova, Dr. Vinegar was able to capture and contain the star’s energy, saving the inhabitants of Marren from certain death.
Author’s Note:
When the storyline for book 2 came to me while I was walking down 2nd Avenue in Manhattan, and I decided that the Star Shadow was going to feature prominently, I knew that I needed to create a back story that was both compelling and complex. Marren was originally just the home world for the Skelks but it quickly grew to be much more than that. The two planets collided and now you have both warring species taking up the same space with a time limit set on their existence due to Cove going supernova. At this point I needed to find a way for the planet to survive once the sun was gone. Pairing satellites with the Star Shadow was the answer.
I named Marren after a friend from college. I like the sound of the name. I tend to name characters and places in the BSU after things that have impacted me somehow. I don’t mean on a large scale necessarily, just things that have piqued my interest in one way or another. I don’t research my character names and I try to stay away from things that sound artificial. If the name overshadows what’s going on in the story, then it’s going to change.
