Mastacors

A lizard-like creature with green-brown skin, large eyes, and a small tuft of dark hair on the crown of its head. They have sharp, triangular claws and sharp teeth that are rounded off at the tips. The average height is of a Mastacor male is 5′6″ with an average tail length of 4′. They are stocky with narrow shoulders, short powerful arms and a slightly extended belly. The females are generally leaner and do not have any hair on the top of their head. They are also slightly shorter on average.

The Mastacors inhabited Sprilla until its destruction. During this catastrophic event, most of the Mastacor population was wiped out, with only a few hundred-thousand surviving. The wealthier ones fled into space, while the rest settled on Marren at the invitation of their bitter rivals, the Skelks.

The Mastacors and Skelks are descended from a common ancestor. Though there are many differences between the two in appearance, they have many things in common, especially when it comes to offspring. Both species have children that are hatched from eggs. When they are young, the hatchlings do not look anything like their parents, or like the lizard creatures they will eventually grow up to be. Their bodies are more human-like, with gray skin and hair that covers their entire head. During this stage of their life, adults are able to communicate telepathically with a child while they are sleeping. Once a hatchling goes though the Groening, this connection is broken and cannot be reestablished.

Author’s Note:

The idea for the Skelks grew out of a need to expand the Brandon Sparks Universe and to add depth to Cofer Gendrew. As her story developed, the need for a rival species to the Skelks became critical and I came up with this great idea to have the planets of two warring species collide and see how that cataclysmic event alters their lives.

What I like best about the Mastacors and their battle with the Skelks is that they are basically identical species, fighting with one another about something small that happened 1000 years ago. On the surface it seems so far fetched, but then I look around and these type of conflicts are everywhere around the globe.

The name Mastacors just came to me. Don’t know how or why, but I liked it from the very start and it stuck.
