Vanessa Sparks

Vanessa Washington was born in Washington DC and her parents moved to Long Island when she was five years old. She graduated from college with a degree in biology with a specialization in botany. She went on to get her Ph.D. and worked as a botanist for a large corporation before leaving to work aboard the Hidden Sun. She met and fell in love with her husband, Matthew Sparks, in college.

Vanessa Sparks is thin with light brown eyes and dark skin. She has shoulder length brown hair and a beautiful smile.

Author’s Note:

In my opinion, the idea of “Mom” overshadows Vanessa Sparks as a character. It is more important to the story that she is Brandon’s Mom, rather than just being Vanessa Sparks. After the attack by the Ptevos, Brandon’s family is shattered. Often times when I am writing Brandon, I keep his mother close at hand. The two were very close and like most children, Brandon is driven by the desire to not let down his parents. It is a very strong motivator.  He suddenly finds himself in a situation where the roles are reversed, he must act like the parent, and take on extreme burdens if he is to save not only his family, but the families of all the children on board the Hidden Sun. In the absence of his mother, Sarah becomes the strong mother-type presence in his life.

Charlie’s Note:

I truly loved Vanessa Sparks. She was a wonderful woman with a warm heart and a better mother a boy could not ask for. While living together, I do not believe that she was aware of the fact that I was sentient, but she always treated me as part of the family. She never called me “Computer” as most guests in the house did, and it was always, “Thank you Charlie” and “I appreciate that Charlie.” These might be small things, but they meant a lot to me.
